Investigations in Professional Standards

About this Course

Professional Standards Investigations bring challenges and risks to Force reputations not found elsewhere in policing.

The Investigations In Professional Standards Course has been devised and is delivered by the former Heads of PSD of two separate UK police forces. It is aimed at all Professional Standards staff and managers and covers operational and strategic decision making, investigating complaints and misconduct as well as working with the IOPC and staff associations.

The course follows the path of a complaint/conduct matter from instigation to misconduct hearing and beyond, along the way equipping students with legal knowledge and the practical skills to ensure the best possible outcomes are achieved. It also covers the overlap with PRI/RPRP and the performance regulations to assist in dealing with those who need to reflect, learn and improve.

Relevant and up to date – providing protection for your forces reputation

We find ourselves in times where poorly managed, or investigated, complaints or conduct matters make front page news and are particularly damaging to force reputations, as well as all those involved. This course will give students the knowledge and skills to conduct or manage robust, legal and transparent investigations. This ensures fairness in the process and the best possible chance of complainant satisfaction. An absolute must for every Professional Standards investigator or manager.

Our PSD courses have been updated to include all the changes to the PSD world arising from the new legislation which came into force on the 1st February 2020. Following on from delivering the national training on this legislation for the College of Policing, our PSD trainers have updated all our courses, to help forces embed the new processes, and create positive learning environments.

Bespoke Courses

We are able to tailor our courses to suit your organisation’s needs and the developmental needs of your staff. Recent examples of bespoke courses we have delivered include:

Appropriate Authority Training Workshop – An exercise based training event focusing on the role and responsibilities of Appropriate Authority within a Professional Standards Department.

Communication skills for Complaint Handlers outside of Schedule 3 – Aimed at those personnel involved in ‘triage’ or ‘service recovery’ roles to give them an understanding of the best use of communication to engage positively with complainants and also their statutory responsibilities.

Refresher workshop – Is intended for those who have previously been trained and features an interactive exercise that leads them through all the regulations and guidance documents relevant to their work. It ensures PSD staff are kept up to date with new legislation and is a very effective CPD tool.

Courses run throughout the year, all around the country. Due to the positive response to them, and the resulting strong demand, early contact to register your interest and reserve places is recommended.

Alternatively, if you prefer, we are able to arrange bespoke PSD Courses throughout the country, either at your organisation or at a suitable venue nearby, and at a time that is convenient to you. This can bring cost savings and reduce the need for staff to travel out of force.
