Investigations in Professional Standards

“I simply don’t know how I’ve managed to do my job without the benefit of this course.  It made sense of what is very complex, confusing, and sometimes contradictory legislation and guidance.  Delivered in a very light hearted and down-to-earth manner by both trainers who are fonts of knowledge”  – NP, IPS Course, January 2016

“Our training is cheaper than a Judicial Review” Great pitch

Professional Standards Investigations bring challenges and risks to Force reputations not found elsewhere in policing.

The Investigations In Professional Standards Course has been devised and is delivered by the former Heads of PSD of two of the UK’s largest police forces.  It is aimed at all Professional Standards staff and managers and covers; operational and strategic decision making, investigating complaints and misconducts as well as working with the IPCC and engaging with staff associations.

The course follows the path of a complaint from instigation to discipline hearing and beyond, along the way equipping students with legal knowledge and the communication and influencing skills to ensure the best possible outcomes are achieved. It also covers the overlap with performance and attendance regulations to assist in dealing with those who ‘cannot do’ as opposed to those who ‘will not do’.

Relevant and up to date – providing protection for your forces reputation

At a time when poorly managed, or investigated, complaints or misconducts make front page news and are particularly damaging to force reputations, and all those involved, this course will give students the knowledge and skills to conduct or manage robust, legal and transparent investigations.  This ensures fairness in the process and the best possible chance of complainant satisfaction.  An absolute must for every Professional Standards investigator or manager.

Our PSD courses have now been updated to include recent changes to the PSD world arising from the updated Home Office Guidance,  the recently launched IPCC Guidance on dealing with discrimination, the Criminal Courts and Justice Act 2015, the Home Office proposals on changes following their review of police conduct processes and the changes associated with holding misconduct hearings held in public.

Bespoke Courses

We are able to tailor our courses to suite your organisation’s needs and the developmental needs of your staff. Recent examples of bespoke courses we have delivered include

Appropriate Authority Training Workshop – An exercise based training event focusing on the role and responsibilities of Appropriate Authority within a PSD department

Introduction to PSD – aimed at those new to a PSD role to give them an understanding of the range of work carried out by a Professional Standards Department and their statutory responsibilities.

Refresher workshop – is intended for those who have previously been trained and features an interactive exercise that leads them through all the regulations and guidance documents relevant to their work.

I thought the group participant activities were really helpful as it allowed individuals to share knowledge and experience.  The informal setting was great and both Ian and Jonny were fantastic. Thank you.  NC

Excellent interactive delivery.  This course has really helped to cement my knowledge further, however I still have a long way to go. I feel much more confident in my role. ZM

As always, both teachers created an atmosphere conducive to learning with a good mix of humour, discussion and presentation.  A winning formula.  Thank you. RB

Investigations in Professional Standards – Manchester January 2016

The course was thought provoking and presented by credible, knowledgeable and personable trainers.  I will leave with greater confidence that I can perform my role to a higher standard than before receiving the training.  Time very well spent.  GB

I found the course very useful and easy to understand, as it was set up in such a way that even somebody with my unique (being completely new to policing) could follow it and learn from it. Thank you, I really enjoyed it. KR

Excellent course, ideal if you have a few weeks experience in PSD. The complex subject of complaints, recordable conduct and conduct, broken down into manageable chunks – the idea of using the buckets to explain is excellent.  Good debate/discussion within the group. Relaxed learning environment. Both trainers easy to listen to and knowledgeable. GC

Excellent course. As someone new to PSD do you have any videos, you tube clips etc that will allow me to look back and view this course as my knowledge grows.  The slides are useful but it needs to be taken in context and what was said during the debates in the class. MH

Investigations in Professional Standards – Worcester January 2016

The course covered every aspect pf PSD work. It was present by 2 knowledgeable and experienced instructors.  I felt that the 4 day course was sometimes condensed to fit the timescales and feel it would be better suited to be presented over 5 days. BL

Course very useful, informative with practical working decisions.  Delivery by trainers excellent, keeping the subject interested.  Knowledge of the trainers of the subject was obviously of a high standard. I experienced a very happy enjoyable working environment. Thanks. HR

An extremely beneficial course which addressed a number of areas that I have been practising yet not fully understanding.  A great interactive training style delivered by experienced and knowledgeable trainers. Would definitely recommend to all PSD and ACU’s. PD

I don’t usually enjoy front loaded courses but found that this course (and trainers) were relevant, professional and caused the input to be interactive and enjoyable.  Professional, relevant and really engaging, enjoyable. Thank you. NW

I attended this course on my 2nd day in PSD. My knowledge of the legislation and processes were very limited at the start of the course, however following the excellent tuition I felt more confident to begin my new role.  It was an excellent course and a must for anyone new to the role. RL

………….and Sancus have now delivered this training to over 39 police forces and UK law enforcement agencies.
