New qualification launched to improve patient safety
We are pleased to announce Sancus Solutions have become the first organisation in the U.K. to achieve SFJ Awards approval to deliver the Investigating Serious Incidents In Healthcare qualification.
The new qualification enhances the existing range of accredited training offered by Sancus in partnership with awarding organisation SFJ Awards.
The level of accountability in healthcare is ever increasing. In the three months from April to June 2017 almost half a million incidents were reported to the NHS National Reporting and Learning System. Most of these did not actually result in patients being harmed however, a small percentage did result in serious injury or even death.
Another important factor is the recent introduction of a ‘Duty of Candour’ on healthcare providers meaning that where an incident, or even a ‘near miss’ has occurred then a full explanation must be given.
The impact of this is the requirement to carry out investigations in a professional, sensitive and proportionate manner.
The focus of all healthcare investigations has to be improving patient safety and delegates undertaking the new qualification will be trained in areas including initial reviews of incidents, the principles of investigations and investigative interviewing. Delivery will include role play interviews to allow students to gain vital experience of how to put their investigative planning into practice.
Accreditation of the course is effectively at post graduate level and this will give managers investing in the training the reassurance that the standards of delivery are high.
Sancus director Mick Turner says: “The focus of all Healthcare inquiries is to get to the root cause of why an incident has happened and to enable a full explanation to be given to all those affected. This training will give delegates the confidence and skills to plan and carry out investigations to an enhanced level.”
SFJ Awards Awarding Organisation Manager, Steve Batty says: “Investigating serious incidents in Healthcare requires a high degree of professionalism and standardisation across the sector. This qualification was requested by the Healthcare sector and I am pleased that Sancus Solutions are providing this new qualification which will provide formal recognition for staff who are carrying out investigations into serious incidents and assure employers that their staff have achieved the competence necessary to carry out their role effectively”.
The course is now available for delivery to healthcare organisations. For further details please contact Sancus Solutions.
