The most important aspect of Sancus Solutions’ training is the delivery by people who are at the top of their field in their own particular subject. Our mantra is, and always will be, “If you haven’t done it you can’t talk about it”.
Here is a brief introduction to some of our consultant trainers who we believe deliver the best training courses in their chosen field.
Michael Williams
Michael Williams is a Barrister of the Middle Temple and the High Court of Australia. He held commissions in the Royal Hong Kong Police (as it then was), the Royal Australian Air Force Police and the British Army Intelligence Corps (TA) before qualifying as a legal practitioner in 1998. He practised as a Senior Crown Prosecutor and Revenue and Customs Prosecutor in England, as Crown Counsel in Queensland, and latterly as In-house Counsel with the General Medical Council.
Michael holds statutory appointments as a Legal Assessor to Panels and Committees of the Health Professions Council, General Medical Council and General Teaching Council for England. He chairs the Appeal Committee of the Chartered Insurance Institute, is a member and panel chair of the Disciplinary Committee of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and also sits as an independent member of the West Midlands, West Mercia, Staffordshire and Warwickshire Police Misconduct Panels.
He has lectured extensively to both academic and professional audiences, has been published in legal and police journals in both the UK and Australia and is co-author of the Dictionary of Law Enforcement, published by Oxford University Press.
In recognition of his interest and experience in healthcare regulation, in March 2011 Michael was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.
Kevin Toole
Kevin Toole was a member of Lancashire Constabulary for over 30 years retiring in 2010. Prior to his retirement he was Detective Chief Superintendent “Head of Crime” for the Force. Giving him a unique overview and experience across a portfolio which included, counter terrorism, homicide investigation, public protection, serious and organised crime, covert policing, intelligence and scientific support.
Kevin was one of the first Nationally Accredited Senior Investigating Officers in the Country and was a homicide SIO for 6 years during which time he was responsible for investigating many high profile and complex cases utilising a range of investigative techniques and tactics including familial DNA technology.
Kevin was the Force lead for Family Liaison Officers, kidnap and extortion, and developed local policies for the investigation of rape and sexual offences. He hosted a number of National Conferences including a pioneering overview of the use of telephony and internet tactics for investigators to consider and exploit.
His investigative philosophy is simply “to have a hunger for information and to pay attention to detail”.
Sue Carney
Sue Carney is a forensic scientist with ten years experience at The Forensic Science Service. Her areas of expertise include body fluids, DNA interpretation and specialist DNA techniques. Sue has given expert testimony at Crown Court on many occasions and has accrued a wealth of experience in the reporting of complex casework. Sexual offences and cold case reviews remain her area of special interest and she has appeared on Granada Reports and BBC Radio Lancashire Breakfast to discuss these.
Sue has provided training on the forensic investigation of sexual offences and DNA profiling to various police forces. She has taught on the NPIA’s specially trained Officers’ Development Program and on the Crime Scene Managers’ course at Harperley Hall. She has also tutored on the FSS in house Expert Witness and Case Assessment and Interpretation courses.
Brian Dunn
Brian Dunn Dip SocPol (Open) BSc (Hons) Open is an associate lecturer at Teesside University having served with Cleveland Police for thirty years reaching the rank of Superintendent before retiring in June 2008. He was a force dedicated Senior Investigating Officer, dealing with numerous major crime investigations in areas such as kidnap, firearms offences and terrorism and the planning and execution of a number of high profile police operations. He has worked as the Head of the Murder Investigation Team, Specialist Crime and Operations and the Force Intelligence Department.
Brian was the Cleveland Police “Family Liaison Coordinator” for 9/11 and as part of the UK police response provided assistance to the police in New York and the families of the British victims. Prior to retirement, as the Head of the Professional Standards Dept he was responsible for investigations into complaints against police, working closely with the “Independent Police Complaints Commission”.
Brian has been a major influence in the development of the HOLMES 2 major investigation database as the national chairperson for the past seven years (2001 to 2008).
Gail Curphey
Gail Curphey is a qualified pharmacist having graduated from the University of Manchester in 1985. She began her career in the Countess of Chester hospital pharmacy, followed by 2 years as a Community Pharmacist. In 1990 Gail joined the Cheshire Family Health Services Authority and began providing prescribing support to GP Fundholding practices. She has remained within the Primary Care Medicines Management arena in Cheshire throughout all of the subsequent NHS re -organisations and is currently responsible for the successful leadership of Central & Eastern Cheshire PCTs Medicines Management Team. She has extensive experience in the provision of professional medicines management advice to the PCT Clinical Commissioning Executive, PCT Board and Directors and is also responsible for the implementation of the Community Pharmacy Contract including contract application decisions and the commissioning of Enhanced Pharmacy Services. In 2007 Gail was appointed as the Accountable Officer for Controlled Drugs for the PCT and instigated the setting up of the Cheshire & Merseyside Strategic Intelligence Network as a support group for Accountable Officers working across the eight PCTs in the area.
Gail served two terms on the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s English Pharmacy Board representing her peers and working to support the professional advancement of Pharmacy. Her work on the Harmonisation of Accreditation for Community Pharmacy Enhanced Services is well recognised within the profession and was included in the Pharmacy White Paper – Pharmacy in England Building on Strengths, delivering the future 2008.
Gail is a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, has a post graduate diploma in Prescribing Science and is currently studying for a post graduate certificate in Health and Social Care Commissioning.
Harry Stephenson
Harry Stephenson LLB is an associate lecturer at Teesside University. He served with Durham Constabulary for over thirty years reaching the rank of Detective Superintendent before retiring in August 2008. He has been commended on fifteen occasions by Judges, HM Coroners, Magistrates and Chief Constables for his outstanding leadership, professionalism and investigative skills and abilities.
During the last ten years of his service as a Superintendent, Harry was Head of Durham Constabulary’s Intelligence Unit, The Principal Senior Investigating Officer for the Constabulary and more recently prior to his retirement Head of the Professional Standards and Legal Services Department. Harry’s areas of expertise are in the management of all types of criminal investigations and critical incidents, including, murder, kidnap, and extortion, product contamination, hostage negotiation, terrorism, economic crime and serious crime as well as considerable experience in all methods of covert policing operations.
Harry was the operational commander and Senior Investigating Officer for all crime related matters for Operation Saxon, the visit to County Durham by the President of the United States George Bush in November 2003. As the Head of Professional Standards he led investigations into police misconduct, and carried out investigations on behalf of the Independent Police Complaints Commission. He has also acted as the presenting officer in Internal Police Misconduct Hearings.
Jim Bettley
Jim Bettley has 30 years police experience performing a variety of roles during his service. He was a Member of Public Order Commanders Cadre, Member of Firearms Incident Commanders Cadre, a Firearms Incident and a Public Order Incident Commander, Ground Commander for all home games of a Premiership Football Club, Force lead investigator for Road Death Homicides, Deputy Divisional Commander and also Operations Commander for a large city.
Jim has experience with RIPA at all levels and from straightforward divisional crime operations to large scale criminal, firearms and public order events where the use of authorised directed covert surveillance was key to success.
He has been involved in training for over 30 years, and has delivered a number of training courses to Police Forces and Local Authorities around the country. These include Professional Investigators courses, Investigative Interview courses, RIPA Applicant, RIPA Gatekeeper and RIPA Authorising Officer courses. Jim holds a first class BA (Hons) in Education and a Certificate in Education.
Tim Alderson
Tim Alderson is a practising collision investigator having 23 years of road traffic experience with 17 years as a collision investigator and senior collision investigator. He has been involved in approximately 1000 fatal investigations either directly, as the lead investigator, or as a supervisor. The incidents range from work-based and agricultural incidents through to major motorway collisions and aircraft crashes.
Tim has an engineering background, he holds a First Class Honours degree in Applied Science and is currently studying for an MSc in Collision Investigation. He is an active trainer and works on both regional and national working groups for Police Collision Investigation strategy and training. He is a recognised expert witness and regularly gives evidence to Inquests, Criminal Courts and to other enquiries. He has also worked with the Air Accident Investigation and HSE on several incidents most notably the Elvington jet-car crash which he investigated.
Robbie Burns
Robbie Burns has thirty years Police experience and specialises in Roads Policing, Drug Recognition Techniques and in the detection of impaired drivers through drugs & alcohol. He introduced this concept to many North West and UK Police Forces and became one of only a small number of National Trainers with ACPO accreditation. Robbie worked with many partnership organisations, stake holders and the media to raise the awareness of impaired driving throughout the UK. He qualified as a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) in America with the California Highway Patrol and was part of a specialised unit which investigated serious and fatal collisions. Robbie has given countless presentations on “Drugs & Alcohol”, their effects, symptoms and consequences, to educational facilities, business’ magistrates, CPS, public sector and many other organisations as well as providing formal training to UK Police Officers. He now continues in this field of work and as recently as March 2011 introduced drug drive training to the Hong Kong Police under ACPO licence. Robbie strives to educate as many organisations as possible to bring a better understanding of the global problem of impaired driving, drug/alcohol awareness and drugs in the workplace. Robbie is also a vastly experienced Family Liaison Officer.
